Powerups appear as glowing tokens during a match. You do not tap the token itself. Your filler must touch it as it grows. That makes collection part of the placement puzzle: the effect may be valuable, but the point still needs enough clearance to produce useful area.

A token changes the value of nearby space

Without a token, you can compare placements mostly by the area they claim and the gaps they leave. Near a powerup, the calculation changes. A smaller filler might clear enemy territory, add bonus area, or create an extra move.

The one rule to remember

A powerup is only collected if the completed filler reaches it. Aim so the token sits inside the shape’s possible growth area, not merely near your tap.

All seven powerups

Bomb

Remove nearby rivals

The Bomb clears enemy fillers around the collection point. The newly empty region can become usable space again, so the effect is both immediate damage and future opportunity.

Best whenA dense red cluster sits close to the token.
Think twice whenThe surrounding area is mostly empty or already blue.

Shrink Ray

Shrink every rival filler 15%

Shrink Ray takes 15% off the size of every rival filler on the board. Because area depends on size squared, that is roughly a 28% cut to their territory — the single largest swing available when your rival is already spread out. It also opens fresh clearance between the shrunken shapes.

Best whenRed already owns many medium and large fillers.
Think twice whenThe match has just started and there is little to shrink.

Convert

Steal nearby rival fillers

Convert changes nearby enemy fillers to your color. Unlike Bomb, it does not reopen the space—it moves the existing area directly from one score to the other.

One catch that Bomb does not share: Convert’s reach scales with the filler that collected it, at about 1.7× that shape’s own size. Bomb always uses the board’s maximum filler size instead, so its blast is the same no matter how cramped your collecting shape was. Squeeze a tiny filler into a gap to reach a Convert token and you may steal almost nothing.

Best whenYour collecting filler has room to grow large and red fillers sit close to it.
Think twice whenReaching the token forces a small filler — the steal radius shrinks with it.

Spread

Scatter satellite fillers

Spread places extra small fillers around the collector where valid space exists. It is excellent at turning a loose open region into a cluster your rival must work around.

Best whenThe token has several open pockets around it.
Think twice whenThe collector is trapped in a very crowded corner.

Double Drop

Gain a bonus placement

Double Drop gives you another filler. In solo and local alternating play, that means an extra placement opportunity. In networked and simultaneous situations, the bonus is resolved automatically so both boards remain synchronized.

Best whenSeveral useful pockets remain and tempo matters.
Think twice whenThe board is so full that no meaningful bonus fit remains.

Wildcard

Use the best-fitting shape

Wildcard picks the filler shape that fits the available geometry best. Like Double Drop, it does not affect the filler that collected it: in alternating solo and local play it arms your next placement, and in simultaneous or online matches it is resolved automatically as a bonus filler so both boards stay synchronized.

Best whenA narrow, pointed, or boxy pocket will still be open on your next turn.
Think twice whenYour fixed shape already suits the pockets that will remain.

Gold Patch

Claim 2–6% bonus area

Gold Patch adds a random bonus worth between two and six percentage points. It does not need a large enemy cluster or a perfect follow-up pocket, so its value is immediate and easy to understand.

Best whenThe match is close or the final seconds are running out.
Think twice whenReaching it sacrifices a clearly larger safe placement.

Which powerup should you chase?

There is no universal ranking because the board state decides the value. Use this order of questions:

  1. Will my filler actually reach the token?
  2. How much normal area do I give up to collect it?
  3. Does the effect have enough targets or open space?
  4. Am I ahead and protecting a lead, or behind and seeking variance?

When behind, the biggest swings come from Shrink Ray against a spread-out rival, then Bomb, Convert, and a high-roll Gold Patch. When ahead, reliable additive effects like Spread and Double Drop extend the lead without depending on enemy positioning. Note that Bomb and Shrink Ray do not care how big your collecting filler is, while Convert and Spread do.

Powerups reward flexible planning. Start by reading the best normal move, then check whether the token turns a nearby second-best point into something stronger.
